Presenting information well

Each job listing posted on your job board is an advert designed to grab the attention of people looking for a job. Well presented information – with headings, lists, etc – makes it easier to see what the job is about and whether a candidate fits its requirements. To make your job listings more effective, you need to present the information clearly.

New styled editor

Today we released an update to Easy Job Boards which makes it easier to style job listings for maximum impact. The new editor will be familiar to anyone who uses similar editors in webmail or even a normal word processor. It has buttons along the top to make text bold, italics, etc and add links to other websites. You can also add lists with numbers or bullets.

You can copy styled text from some other applications and paste it in to the editor. Often the styles will be kept, saving you work.

Previously we used Markdown as a way to format job descriptions. The new system is much easier to use and that’s our primary goal for Easy Job Boards! All existing job listings have been automatically migrated, so there’s nothing you need to do.

As always, we’re happy to hear your feedback.

Your own Job Board

If you have tried Easy Job Boards yet, you can get your own job board here. It is easy to use, free to try and currently only $18/month if you decide to subscribe.

You can now try out the Easy Job Boards service without having to sign up.

Nothing kills a person’s interest in a website faster than the dreaded “Sign Up” form. You wanted to try it out to get a feel for how it works, but you can’t do that without signing up. Bummer. We know this from our own experience, yet we allowed ourselves to fall in to the same trap.

Before today, you needed to sign up to create a job board. For technical reasons it’s far easier to do it that way. But it turns away people who might otherwise have been interested.

The good news is, as of today, you can create a job board and try out our hosted job board service without signing up for an account! Just create your job board by giving it a name. In the background we create a temporary guest account which lets you try out the job board, add jobs in the management interface and see if it’s the right job board software for you.

There are things you can’t do with a guest account. It’s only temporary, so you can’t sign out and then come back later to sign in again. But if you’re interested enough to want to come back, it only takes a minute to sign up and make your temporary account permanent.

With a guest account, you can’t publish your job board – only you can see the job listings and fully interact with the job board. When you do sign up, we give you a 14-day free trial which lets you publish your job board on the internet for anyone to see. That way, friends, colleagues and customers can try it before you make the decision to subscribe to our job board service.

So, if you have tried Easy Job Boards yet, now is the time! Get your own job board here.

Despite the world economic funk, companies are still advertising jobs and recruiting talent. Jobs in certain niches are increasing a lot, reflecting trends in business.

One example of this is the trend for “green jobs”. A green job (or “green-collar job”) is one where the role or company is related to environmental responsibility.

It could be in science or engineering, such as research and development of alternative energy production.

It could be a role in a normal company, helping to audit and reduce energy consumption, reduce waste, promote recycling, etc.

Or it could be a normal job in a green company or organisation with an environmental mission.

Here’s a graph, courtesy of Google Trends, showing an increase in people interested in green jobs.

Green jobs is an excellent example of an employment niche and this is where small job boards typically thrive. Instead of having green jobs mixed in with all the other jobs, recruiters can get better results by advertising on a green job board. People who specifically want to work for a green company or in a green role will seek out and follow job boards that offer those types of jobs.

There are a few larger green job boards around, such as TreeHugger, Greenbiz.com and SustainLane.

More specific ones include Green Jobs UK and Wind Industry Jobs.

Yesterday we put live some new features on Easy Job Boards.

Job Roles

You can now add Roles to your job board so that jobs can be categorised for easy browsing. For example, a job board for restaurant staff could have roles for Chef, Waiter/Waitress, Matra’de, etc.

Easily add roles using the board management interface

Visitors to your job board can filter the available jobs by role and also by contract type – Permanent, Contract, Freelance, Other. For boards with a lot of job listings this makes it much easier for people to find exactly the jobs they are interested in.

Filter by Role and Contract Type to show only matching jobs

Themes and Custom Colours

As well as adding your own logo to your job board, you can now choose some of the colours. We have a few ready made “themes” (or colour schemes) which you can use, or you can choose colours for the background, headings and links, perhaps to match the colours on your main website or logo.

Pick a ready-made theme or choose your own colours

We’ve also made some improvements to the layout of job listings and the management interface. If you haven’t tried Easy Job Boards yet, you can sign up and get our 14-day free trial and take a look for yourself.

We’d love to hear your feedback.

We’ve received some really good feedback from users of our job board software with ideas on features they’d like to see.

We’re committed to keeping the job boards as simple and easy-to-use as possible. As part of this, we are careful to only add features that provide enough value to a large proportion of our customers.

Coming soon to Easy Job Boards…

Job Categories

Some specialised job boards have only a few job listings at a time, so a simple list of jobs is enough. For others, it’s better to add categories for different roles or types of position.

We’re working on a simple categories feature so that jobs can be organised in to categories you define. For example, a board for accountancy jobs might have categories for each role, such as “Accountant”, “Auditor”, “Financial Controller”, etc. Categories could also represent geographical areas or specific skills.

Job Board Customisation

You can already customise the appearance of your job board by adding your logo, but we wanted to go further.

We’re working on a customisation feature where you can choose colours to use on your job board. These colours can then match your branding or colours used on the main website.

If you don’t need such fine-grained control, choose from a small selection of ready made themes.

These features should be released shortly. We’re also adding contract types (Permanent, Contract, Freelance, etc) and making ongoing improvements to the board management interface.

A couple of days ago we announced that we’d soon be implementing custom domain functionality in to Easy Job Boards. Well, we quietly introduced the feature last night which means that as well as being able to run your job board on an easyjobboards.com subdomain e.g. myboard.easyjobboards.com, you can now run it on any domain which you own.

So, if you own newyorkaccountancyjobs.com, you can now run your job board directly from that address. Or, if you already have a company website, you can use a jobs subdomain like jobs.mycompany.com. There are only two things you need to do to make it work:

Step 1: Add the domain to your board settings

Log in to your board and go to the settings page. Add your domain name under Advanced Settings.

Simply add your domain name, save and you're all set

Step 2: Change DNS settings

When somebody types in your domain name, it needs to resolve to our server so we can show your job board. You can usually manage DNS settings at your domain registrar (where you registered the domain) or through a third-party DNS hosting company.

The best way is to add an alias or CNAME record which maps your full domain to your boards subdomain on Easy Job Boards. For example, the full domain geekjobs.im is an alias for geekjobs.easyjobboards.com.

Example DNS settings using zoneedit.com

With these changes made, your job board is available to visitors using your own custom domain. The private management interface still uses the subdomain.
